Bought this book because my Professor requires the class to read it. In my opinion, this is actually a good book. It talks about a lot of things you can and can't do while you're working as an IS/IT person. However, I think this book is a bit bias to the point that I feel like the author is definitely defending the IS/IT person. In addition, I also believe the author is a long time experienced IT person because the way he wrote the book is completely different than other types of book I've read.Product details

Excellence in IT is a well written book that gives helpful advice for navigating the path to a successful career in Information Technology. Warren did a great job of making the writing easy to read. He doesn't dive in to specific systems as examples, which actually will make the book much easier to understand for people no matter how far along in the IT world they may be. By keeping the examples more generic, he makes it easier to apply to any scenario you might find yourself in.
Warren tackles all the major hurdles you will encounter in the Information Technology realm. Topics like the assets you will need, bad habits that hold back many IT professionals, how to handle the stress that will almost assuredly come with the career, understanding your end-users, managing your skill-set, and how to be a well-functioning member of the team.
As a current member of the Information Technology field, I felt Warren hit the nail on the head of what you can expect and the things that will help you reach excellence. I found myself nodding in agreement through much of the book and even picking up some helpful advice. I highly recommend this book to anyone who may be considering a career in IT and even for those already in it. As Warren points out in the book, you should be constantly learning. You might as well start with this book.
Excellence in IT Achieving Success in an Information Technology Career by Warren C. Zabloudil is a practical guide to becoming a top notch IT tech. This clearly written book gives basic how to's in limiting job stress, avoiding pitfalls and growing in experience and expertise in the information technology field.
The book is full of very common sense advice. Zabloudil feels that any tech has the ability to achieve excellence. It is not an out-of-reach goal for the person willing to be guided by his suggestions. Excellence is not reserved for a select few but is attainable for anyone willing to exercise good judgment and who understands that excellence isn't found in a myriad of compliments but in a system that works silently and unobtrusively as possible.
As someone with IT experience in the healthcare field, I can relate to some of the causes of stress that one encounters with upgrades and implementation of new systems. Although the author doesn't spell out specific programs to learn or applications to master, his advice is to communicate well with end users as well as upper management, say no to requests that aren't based on solid understanding of the processes in place, and always be in a learning mode as technology is an ever changing field. These suggestions would benefit any person who works with a team, whether in a technology field or not.
I am not nor have I ever been the IT professional, but I can appreciate Warren C. Zabloudil’s approach to the IT world. Courage, clarity, focus and sense of scope are valuable in any profession, but for someone entering into or managing the IT fortunes of a business or a school, these qualities seem like no brainers. We rely so heavily on technology that many of us look to others to understand how to set up or to repair a system allowing us to simply turn on and go.
What Excellence in IT Achieving Success in an Information Technology Career does and does well is to place IT in its proper role within a business and explain the best manner in which the IT professional should operate to protect the bottom line of the company while managing its IT assets. It's a lesson that's learned far too late it seems. Our business took the low bid on a laptops, MPCs, to save money but ended up dumping the lot of them prior to the scheduled cycle because they were, as their initials came to mean, “Major Piece of Crap.” If the IT people had had the courage to say no or to at least test out the equipment prior to purchase, the business wouldn’t have wasted the money or resources on repairing a bad piece of equipment and would have spent more money to buy less trouble.
As Zabloudil points out, the IT department doesn’t really generate money for businesses, but it can have a major impact on the bottom line. The IT professional needs to have the ability to do more than just repair or install systems, but to explain to the users the best way to utilize or manage the assets. As an end user, I cannot tell you how many times IT professionals have sounded like they were doing me a favor fixing my computer or how often I had to ask them to translate their instructions into standard English just so I could follow them. Zabloudil exposes that behavior as well as the perennial inability to find the IT guy or gal to fix the problem or the IT person who knows so much they are never going to ask for help. That arrogance can lead to miscommunication, lost man hours and generalized distrust of the IT Department.
While I appreciate Zabloudil’s analogies and clear writing style, I would like a few more real-world examples that IT people and end-users can relate to if only to suggest that there are some problems that are universal in this technology-heavy world in which we live. As he points out, there are some things in the world of technology that are well-past their usefulness, and it may be that he’s trying to avoid dating the book before its time.
People thinking about entering into the IT profession, or people hiring such professionals, could learn a great deal about the mindset and the approaches Zabloudil lays out about what they want the ideal professional to have. He provides a nice overview of what the ideal professional could offer and how the technician could maintain his sanity and his skills in the ever-changing world of technology.
